Past Events

2011-2012

  • Open House:
  • Potluck and General Meeting: An informal meeting to learn more about SEEDS and have your say in what we do in the upcoming school year. This is a great opportunity to get more involved, meet new people and have some great food.

2010-2011

  • ECi Workshop and Competition: The Environmental Challenge International (ECi) is a student competition presented as part of the A&WMA’s Annual Conference and Exhibition where students have to come up with a solution to a real world problem. This year, students had to develop a renewable energy portfolio for the United States. SEEDS hosted a workshop at Carleton where students had a chance to learn and discuss with renewable energy engineers and policy professionals. Then, a group of five students worked on their proposal and competed in the ECi where the team brought back 2nd place!
  • Presentation Practice Sessions: To help students prepare for 4th year presentations, thesis defenses or conference presentations, SEEDS will periodically hold practice sessions where presenting students receive feedback from other SEEDS members. Feedback is a gift and presenting students are always grateful of any comments they receive.
  • World Water Week Events: In honour of World Water Week, SEEDS hosted two events. First Professor Ormeci spoke about drinking water issues and solutions that we are currently facing both here in Canada and internationally. Then, there was a screening of Blue Gold, which features one of Canada’s top water crusaders, Maude Barlow. The screening was followed by a very lively discussion.
  • How to Find an Academic Position in Science and Engineering: Dr. Banu Ormeci shared her experience and expertise with aspiring academics.
  • Soccer: A team of SEEDS member competed in a soccer tournament hosted by the International Student Success Office.
  • Skating on the Canal: We all went skating on the canal together and enjoyed hot chocolate, beaver tails, ice sculpture and the fresh winter air.
  • Career Paths: A career panel designed to help current students studying environmental related fields identify future career paths and what it takes to get there.
  • Potlucks! What better way to meet your peers than to share food. We sure do like our potlucks and during 2010-2011 we had three; one in October, December and March.
  • Open House: presented by SEEDS and the A&WMA. Two invited speakers and our returning compeating team in the Environmental Challenge International

SEEDS hosted a workshop at Carleton where students had a chance to learn and discuss with industry professionals. Then, students worked in groups to prepare a short proposal of their solutions and one team was chosen to compete in the ECi.
