Approach to Collection of Proper Soil Vapour Intrusion Air Samples for O. Reg. 153 Brownfield Sites

The Ottawa Valley Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA-OVC) will be hosting a presentation and networking event on “Approach to Collection of Proper Soil Vapour Intrusion Air Samples for O. Reg. 153 Brownfield Sites” on April 23, 2015.

Soil Vapour Intrusion (SVI) assessment is of great interest because of its importance in characterizing O. Reg. 153 Brownfield Sites. Development of a site specific conceptual site model (CSM) is normally based on a tiered stepwise approach requiring collection of different information at each step of the process.

This presentation will focus on proper collection of soil gas, indoor air, sub-slab & ambient air samples required as part of filling a record of site condition (RSC) under O. Reg. 153/04. Different considerations for sampling soil gas versus health-based indoor air will be discussed including factors that affect the conceptual site model, the soil gas sampling train, sampling equipment/media, quality control, collection of field sample & other issues.

Speaker: Roy Smith (M.Sc., MBA, C.Chem) Air Quality Manager, ALS Environmental, Waterloo, ON

As the Air Quality Manager, ALS Environmental, Waterloo, Mr. Smith manages the Air Quality department including development of analytical testing capabilities for chemical substances in air. He also serves as a technical expert to clients on air sampling techniques and analytical methodologies. Prior to joining ALS, Mr. Smith had 25+ years of air quality experience in the private sector and with government. He held positions of senior scientist, laboratory manager and AIHA Laboratory Director with the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Health Laboratory. Mr. Smith was a founding partner of an ISO17025 accredited air quality/industrial hygiene laboratory. Over the years, Mr. Smith has managed OH&S consulting staff, performed training, taught courses and presented at technical workshops. He has 14 air sampling method technical publications, in addition to extensive experience in overseeing large air quality projects and government research studies.
